Dad and Jeff came to in the basement, wearing their regular clothes. It was pitch black.

"I guess that lightning strike knocked the power out," said Jeff. "We must have dreamed that whole thing."

"Very bizarre," Dad agreed. "You ready for dinner? I'm in the mood for one of my regular restaurants. We'll go right after I watch the rest of this movie..."

"You saved us, Tina!" Dad hugged Mom and gave her a big smooch.

"I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus!" Jeff called out.

"What the heck just happened?" Mom exclaimed.

"We'll tell you all about it over dinner," Dad said. "At one of our old standbys. I've had enough adventure for one day."

“Whether this is real or not, we don’t want her to have to watch us fry.”

“Turn off the TV, Mom!” Jeff yelled. Dad joined in too: “Push the power button, Tina!”

She turned off the monitor, just as the warden threw the switch, and suddenly, everything went black for Jeff and Dad.

“I don’t want to stay here if I can help it! Maybe she can find a way to get us out of here.”

A brilliant idea came to Jeff, just as the warden was about to throw the switch.

“Mom! Push the Eject button!”

She did, and suddenly, a beam of energy shot from the screen as before, and Dad and Jeff came tumbling through the monitor, still wearing their costumes.

“Well, I still figure this can’t really be happening,” Dad said. “We must be dreaming or something. So let’s just stick together and see what happens.”

A few minutes later the guard came and led Santa and the elf to the electric chairs. They were strapped in, moist sponge on the head, all the stuff you see in the movies.

Suddenly, a loud gasp was heard, but it did not come from anyone in the room. They looked around, and were shocked to find that when they faced a certain direction, they could see back into the basement they had come from—and there was Tina, holding the remote, nearly in a state of shock.

“What should we do, Dad? Urge her to find a way to save us? Or get her to turn it off so she doesn’t get upset?”

“If it’s just the one guard that comes to lead us away, let’s split up,” Dad decided. “I’ll go this way, you go that way.”

Sure enough, the same guard came back, alone, to lead them to the electric chair. He opened the cell and removed their leg shackles so they could walk.

“Now!” Jeff yelled. They lowered their shoulders and drove the guard into the wall, knocking the wind out of them. They then scurried down the hallway in opposite directions.

Unfortunately, the taste buds weren’t the only things Dad and Jeff had retained. Dad still had his same knees, and wasn’t able to move quickly. Less than two minutes after escaping, other guards who had heard the commotion saw him and chased him down. They hauled him to the electric chair and strapped him in.

Jeff was nowhere to be seen. Dad didn’t know if he had escaped or not. But he DID see someone he knew. Somehow, if Dad faced a certain direction, he could see back into the living room—and his wife was standing right there!

Tina had entered the basement a few minutes ago, and was confused by both the commotion on the screen and the absence of her husband and son. She picked up the remote to turn off the TV.

“Tina!” Dad yelled, as the warden prepared to throw the switch. “Hit Eject!”

Tina, still not fully realizing what was going on, or how Santa could be talking to her, pressed the Eject button. Suddenly, a beam of energy shot from the screen as before, and Dad came tumbling through the monitor, still wearing the Santa suit.

"What the heck just happened?" asked Mom.

"I have no idea," Dad replied. "I just know that you saved my life, and that I love you. I now also know that life's too short to try foods you're not sure you'll enjoy. Let's go get some dinner!"

"Very bizarre," Dad agreed. "But it's prompted me to try some new things. For starters, I'm not going to bother watching the rest of that movie. And I'm also going to be more open to trying new restaurants. Let's go eat!"

“You only live once, right? Let’s get weird.”

So Jeff and Dad requested all sorts of French foods, Asian cuisine, seafood, and even some Survivor-style gross-out items for good measure. Jeff’s fears that they had the actual palates of North Pole residents, and that only cookies would taste good to them, proved unfounded. They didn’t like everything they tried, but on the whole it was an amazing meal.

But then the guard reappeared. “Wrap it up,” he barked. “We’re taking you to the chair in five minutes.”

“Crap,” said Dad. “I didn’t realize the execution happened so soon after the last meal. We haven’t made a plan!”

“Well,” Jeff said, “we don’t really know how to get out of here. When they open the cell, should we try to run off in separate directions? Make it harder for them to catch both of us? Or should we follow their orders, and hope a better escape plan will become clear as we see more of the prison?”

“I don’t really want to risk having my last meal be a disgusting one,” Dad said.

So Jeff and Dad requested entrees from all of Dad’s favorite places: Texas Roadhouse. Applebee’s. Jim’s. Lambert’s. Other places that end with apostrophe-s. Jeff’s fears that they had the actual palates of North Pole residents, and that only cookies would taste good to them, proved unfounded. Their meal was delicious.

But then the guard reappeared. “Wrap it up,” he barked. “We’re taking you to the chair in five minutes.”

Dad and Jeff tried to regain their bearings. “Why are you in that elf costume?” Dad asked.

“Why are YOU dressed as Santa?” Jeff replied.

Suddenly, they became more aware of their surroundings. They were in a jail cell—the jail cell from the movie.

“Dad, when you hit the Input button, it somehow PUT us IN the movie! This is crazy!”
Just then, a guard approached their cell.

“Here are your order forms for your last meal. I think you should ask for reindeer, I’m sure you’ve always wondered what they taste like!”

The guard cackled at his own joke as he walked away.

“Well,” said Dad, “we obviously need to figure out what’s going on, and try to find a way out of this mess. But if we haven’t had our last meals yet, we still have a little time. Let’s get some food.”

“So we can have anything we want,” said Jeff. “Do you want to take this chance to go wild and have something you’ve never tried before? Or are you just going to play it safe?”

Jeff entered the basement, where his Dad was watching a Christmas movie as usual. On the scene was a courtroom scene, and Santa Claus was on the witness stand.

“Hey Dad,” Jeff said. “Are you watching Miracle on 34th Street?”

“No, this is one I’ve never seen before. Santa and his elves are on trial. They’re facing the death penalty.”

“That seems a little dark. What are they accused of doing?”

"I'm not really clear on that,” Dad said. “It’s been weird so far, not very good. But I always watch to the end.”

Intrigued, Jeff sat down to watch. Santa and his elf were convicted and sentenced to death, though it was still unclear what crime they had been charged with, or if they were truly guilty.

A few minutes later, Dad paused the movie to refill his water bottle. When he returned, instead of pushing the Play button, Dad hit Input by mistake. At that exact instant, the house was struck by lightning. A surge of electricity passed through the house, and suddenly, a lightning-like beam of energy emerged from the TV, engulfed Dad and Jeff, and pulled them inside the screen.
